It actually makes sense. If you look at all the different, complex life forms on Earth you will notice patterns: a torso, a head with two eyes, two arms, two legs, fingers, etc. Basically, these things evolved at different times in history with no connection with eachother whatsoever.
It is safe to assume that these things pop up so often because they just work. They would most likely work on other planets, too. If we ever meet actual aliens, my bet is on opposable thumbs.
