Q&A: How exciting are the Mars photos? Really?
Question by …………………………..: How exciting are the Mars photos? Really?
Friends of mind don’t seem to appreciate just how fortunate that this generation, and generations to come, are able to see, and will be able to see, photos of the surface of an alien world. I for one truly appreciate being able to see the photo of a Martian sunset, and the photo of Earth seen from Mars. My friends only see photos of a barren landscape on a “dead” world, but I see images that are truly remarkable. Ancient astronomers would have loved to to see what people, like my friends, take for granted. They could only gaze at the “Red Planet” through telescopes, but we have detailed photos of the surface. I know “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, but does anyone else agree that these are some truly remarkable photos?

Definitely.
Not only the detail and resolution, but the technology, dedication of the scientists and government, and support of people like you and I (and so many more).
The problem these days is that so many people have grown up with CGI movies, computers, cell phones, PDAs, the Internet and all the gadgets that are so much a part of everyday life. They don’t or can’t appreciate the effort, time, resources, heartache, setbacks, victories, and committment this (and other) missions required. To most young people its just “so what, PS2 or Nintendo is more exciting”.
I feel sorry for anyone that can’t see the glory behind those amazing images.

I for one love this kinda thing.
Its cool, those pictures..
If I could have given an ancient astronomer an up close picture of mars… he would have peed his pants…
If I could have given Columbus a world globe… he would have treasured it as priceless…
So, yes I do appriciate the total awsomeness of space, and all its beauty.
I have an altlas of the universe that has hundreds of pictures of outerspace… its truly amazing.

I agree with you 100% – we are SO fortunate to get to see these pictures. The Cassini spacecraft orbitting Saturn is returning unbelievable images as well.

I totally agree. I have always been awed by the pictures of Mars. It has always been my favorite planet, and I have waited as several of the past Mars missions have been made, traveled seven months to the Red Planet, then made the atmospheric entry, or aerobraking. It is well worth waiting for and anyone who does not appreciate the incredible data and pictures we have from Mars, is missing out. We have come soo far, from the ancient astronomers, who could only make out a small red disk. We can see clouds, canyons, water ice, polar caps, carbon dioxide snow, volcanoes, dust devils, deserts, dust storms, a red sky that is blue at night, and so much more. It is amazing and I am forever grateful to all the people who not only support this, but who make it possible.
